Getting
Started
Getting into any form of motorsport can be perceived as difficult
and expensive. At club level, and with autotesting, it is very straight
forward. Check out the calendar, and your local clubs (links on
this site) and go along to an event. You will find that any of the
competitors or organisers will be friendly and approachable.
To take part in an event you will need to be a member of a car
club. You can join your local car club, or join Autotest Drivers’
Club Scotland, which will allow you entry to events run by many
clubs across the country. Membership to ADCS costs £5 per
annum.
If you join our Yahoo group, you will be able to download entry
forms for events. Not all clubs’ entry forms are available
by this means, so you may need to contact the club directly. Simply
complete the entry form and post it off before the closing date,
along with your entry fee, and you will have an entry for the event.
Depending on the club, the entry fee will usually cost between £10
to £15.
Cars
used
Any standard road car can compete at autotesting. At any event,
you will be able to see a wide variety of road cars and competition
cars taking part. Because autotesting is more about driver skill,
than car performance, often the smaller less powerful, standard
cars can be more competitive than expensive machinery, or motorsport
specials. Have a look at the photos section to see the variety of
cars used.
Some cars are better suited to autotesting than others. Because
of the relatively compact areas used for the sport, top speed and
big power figures are not required. Generally, small front wheel
drive cars will prove the quickest around an autotest course. Many
competitors have opted for rear wheel drive cars, as they offer
a different driving experience and while not quite as competitive
as front wheel drive, will provide spectacular tail out fun.
