| Do
I need a special licence
Once you have joined a club, you will be able to compete at any
club event run by that club, or to which that club is invited. If
you are planning on competing in the British Autotest Championship,
you will need to apply for a basic RACMSA (RAC Motor Sports Association)
competition licence. This will cost £15, and is the most basic
competition licence you can get. Drivers need not hold a UK driving
licence to compete at club level. See the comment in ‘what
age can I start’ section.
What
age can I start at
From the age of 14 drivers can enter the ‘production car
autotest’. This is a class for standard road saloon cars,
driven to the event (not by the 14 year old!) under 1400cc. These
drivers must have a full UK driving licence holder, as a passenger,
in the car with them throughout the event.
From the age of 16, drivers can enter an event, as long as the
car is a road saloon car under 1400cc. Drivers without a UK driving
licence can also enter this class.
Can
I use someone else’s car
With the permission of the car’s owner, one car can be used
by as many competitors as you wish. In practice, it becomes difficult
for more that 6 or so drivers to use the same car, as time will
run out for all drivers to get all their runs competed. For many
competitors, car sharing proves to be a cost effective way to take
on the sport. This can often allow a group of friends, or car club
to have a dedicated autotest car.
Where
can I get help and advice
The best point is the Yahoo
group. There are many keen autotesters in the forum,
who will always be happy to offer help and advice. There is a link
on the home page
to join the yahoo group. Failing that, you can contact ADCS’s
Chairman : domshanahan@googlemail.com
What
can I do if I don’t want to compete
There are many local clubs, who are always keen to get new people
involved in the sport. All the organisers support their clubs and
events on a voluntary basis. There are always requirements for marshals,
time keepers and other official roles at events. Contact your local
club (links on the home page) or go along to an event, and speak
to some of the organisers.
